Gordian Knott

Gordian Knott – 6.0% ABV

A rich copper coloured US West Coast IPA style brewed in collaboration with Hardknott. We have tied together a complex knot of hops that produce a robust and lingering but balanced bitterness, giving way to an explosion of late hop character with citrus and pine. The knot is cut through with Californian Ale Yeast and a smooth malty base of sweet caramel.

Frisco - lens

Frisco – 4.4% ABV

A California Common brewed with San Francisco Lager Yeast and a trio of American hops; Cluster, Willamette and Chinook. This style of beer is often referred to as “steam” beer due to the relatively warm fermentation temperature.

Pale amber in colour, Frisco is fruity with hints of caramel, a crisp bitterness and a dry biscuity finish.

Mumm's The Word - pump clip

Mumm’s the Word – 4.5% ABV

A White Ale or “Mumm” brewed in collaboration with publican and beer writer Mitch Adams. This modern take on an old beer style is hazy and golden in colour, brewed with Wheat, Oats and British Beata hops, and distinctively flavoured with a blend of herbs and spices including Elderflower, Pennyroyal, Cloves and freshly picked Pine Shoots. Sweet aromas of honey and apricot lead to complex herbal flavours with fresh pine and a refreshing finish.

Mumm’s the Word will be available in selected Brains pubs from July 9th 2014.

Sorachi Ace

Sorachi Ace – 4.2% ABV

Sorachi Ace joins our range of single hop beers. Originally grown in Japan in the 1970s, the Sorachi Ace hop is now grown in the USA and has been added at three different stages of the brewing process to display its unique characteristics.  Amber in colour, this beer has gentle aromas of spicy citrus that lead to intense flavours of sweet lemongrass with hints of dill, tea and ginger.

Sorachi Ace will be available in selected Brains pubs from the start of July.

BCB_WeissWeissBaby

Weiss Weiss Baby 4.9% ABV

Following WAles Beer Festival, Weiss Weiss Baby is back!

A traditional Bavarian style Weissbier (“white beer”) brewed with malted wheat and Hallertau Tradition hops. This naturally cloudy beer uses distinctive Weissbeer yeast to produce a light, refreshing  beer bursting with fruity banana flavours and spicy cloves.

Weiss Weiss Baby will be making a return to a selection of Craft Brewery pubs from June 12th.

Gin Lane - lens

Gin Lane – 5.0% ABV

Limited edition, speciality ale exclusively launched at WAles Beer Festival, and reappearing at London’s Great British Beer Festival!

In a journey that brings together two of the nation’s favourite drinks, the prosperity of Beer Street brings out the best in Gin Lane. Lemon and lime aromas give way to herbal, spicy hop flavours and finally a dry, pleasantly bitter aftertaste created by adding gin botanicals to the brew, including ground juniper berries and crushed coriander seeds. Crisp and sharp, with a distinctive gin flavour, Gin Lane is the perfect tonic.

Weiss Weiss Berry lens

Weiss Weiss Berry – 4.9%ABV

A traditional Bavarian style Weissbier (“white beer”) brewed with malted wheat and Hallertau Tradition hops, infused with a blend of summer berries. Brown Sauce

Brown Sauce – 5.0% ABV

Brown Sauce is a hoppy brown ale brewed in collaboration with journalist and beer writer Glynn Davis. Crystal, Dark Crystal and Brown malts produce dark caramel and toffee flavours with hints of coffee and liquorice, which are contrasted by the fresh, citrusy notes of all British Cascade hops. Nut brown in colour, satisfyingly sweet and zingy, Brown Sauce is the ideal condiment for any British dish.

Brown Sauce will be launched at our tap takeover events at the end of May, will appear at the WAles Beer Festival & Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival from June 5th – 7th and available in selected Brains Pubs the following week.

Atomic Blonde - pump clip

Atomic Blonde – 4.0% ABV

A hoppy blonde ale brewed with Pale Ale and Lager malts, Atomic Blonde is hopped with Citra, Amarillo, Summer and Mosaic. A burst of tropical fruit aromas leads to flavours of peach and sweet grapefruit to create a refreshing beer with a balanced bitterness.

 ABV: 4.0%

 Atomic Blonde will be available in selected Brains Pubs from May 28th.

Zitrus pump clip

Zitrus – 3.5% ABV

Light and slightly hazy, Zitrus is brewed with Wheat malt and uses a distinctive Berliner Weisse yeast that combines with Galaxy and Mosaic hops to produce a sharp, zesty and slightly spicy beer that is refreshingly quaffable.

 ABV: 3.5%

 Zitrus will be available in selected Brains pubs from May 21st.

Give It Some Welly!

Give It Some Welly! 4.3% ABV

An Irish style Red ale brewed in collaboration with the team from the Duke of Wellington pub in Cardiff, Brains’ current Cask Ale Pub of the Year. Pale Ale malt and roast barley combine to create a deep copper-red coloured ale with sweet fruity aromas of red berries and citrus, balanced with hints of caramel, roast malt and a refreshingly dry bitter finish.

Give It Some Welly! will be available in cask, launched at the Duke of Wellington, Cardiff on Thursday 1st May and delivered to selected Brains pubs from Monday 5th May.

Old Tricks

Old Tricks 4.6% ABV

Brewed to mark the retirement of Brains’ long-serving Master Brewer Don Jeffrey, this Alt style beer combines two of his great passions; beer and magic. Munich and Crystal malts, Hallertau and Saaz hops and Dusseldorf Alt yeast conjure up a combination of sweet malt, caramel and rich raisin flavours, and a classic floral, spicy aroma from the noble hops that’s just magic!

Old Tricks will be available in cask and delivered to selected Brains pubs from Wednesday 12th of May.

Czech Please

Czech Please! 5.0% ABV

Czech Please! is a Czech-style Pilsner brewed with lager yeast and Kazbek hops from the Czech Republic. Slow fermented and matured for a total of 28 days, this beer is smooth and fruity with aromas of lemon and grapefruit, finishing with a crisp, dry and refreshing aftertaste.

Czech Please! will be available in cask and delivered to selected Brains pubs from Wednesday 16th of April.

Obadiah Poundage

Obadiah Poundage 4.5% ABV

Obadiah Poundage is dark brown in colour, and has flavours of liquorice, treacle and a dark caramel sweetness from Crystal and Dark Crystal malts, balanced with roast coffee flavours from Brown and Chocolate malts. Obadiah Poundage was the pen-name of a Brewery worker who in his letter on beer duty to the London Gazette in the 1700s, recorded one of the first histories of the style of porter.

Obadiah Poundage will be available in cask and delivered to selected Brains pubs from Wednesday 16th of April.

Polar Beer 5% ABV

Polar Beer is a sunshine yellow blonde ale, brewed with Polaris, a new-generation German hop. We’ve commemorated our first use of this hop by naming the beer after it, Polaris being another name for Pole or North Star. Ale and lager malts combine to create a smooth, crisp malty base with a sweet nose, followed by refreshingly light and distinctive herbal flavours from the Polaris hop.

Polar Beer will be available in keg and delivered to selected Brains pubs from Thursday 3rd of April.

Vic’s Secret 4.2% ABV

Vic’s Secret is the latest beer in our Single Hop Range.

Vic’s Secret is a new hop variety from Australia and is added at three different stages of the brewing process to provide bitterness, aroma and flavour.

Vic’s Secret has aromas of grapefruit and flavours of apricots and sweet melon, followed by a dry and malty finish.

Originally called Victoria’s Secret, but changed for obvious reasons, Vic’s Secret will be available in our pubs from Monday 17th of March.

Back for March is Simply Red.

Simply Red was the first red ale we brewed in the Brains Craft Brewery. Brewed with premium pale ale, Munich, crystal and cara red malts for colour, and hopped with a combination or Amarillo, Citra, Cascade, Summit and Centennial this dark copper red ale packs a powerful bitterness and a citrusy punch.

Dragon 3.9% ABV

First brewed for the Celt Beer Academy’s celebration of Welsh Pale Ales, Dragon makes a welcome return this March.

Crafted in a traditional Welsh style Dragon is a 3.9% ABV pale ale. Brewed with Premium pale ale malts and a blend of Challenger and First Gold hops Dragon has hints of fruit and spice and a mild bitter finish.

Crowded Hops 4.6% ABV

Crowded Hops is a New Zealand pale ale crammed with Kiwi hops.

This light copper coloured beer is hopped with Dr Rudi, Pacific Jade, Nelson Sauvin and Pacifica giving it a tropical burst balanced with a grapefruit sharpness and a subtle fruity wine character.

Crowded Hops is available in all of our keg stocking pubs from Monday 3rd of February.

17 Gold Bottles 4.3% ABV

17 Gold Bottles was inspired by a particularly thorough golden ale ‘tasting session’ had in the Brewery by our Head Brewer.

Yellow gold in colour, with aromas of honeysuckle and sweet melon, 17 Gold Bottles is crisp and refreshing in flavour with a citrus zestyness from Chinook, Centennial and Citra hops.

17 Gold Bottles will be available as a cask beer from Monday 3rd of February in these pubs.

Barry Island IPA is back! 6% ABV

We have a special number of barrels of Barry Island IPA currently available in our pubs.

Created by Simon Martin, aka Mr Real Ale Guide, this India Pale Ale was inspired by the ‘IPA revolution’ across the pond. The boy from Barry has used a trio of hops from the US in this pale coloured ale, which is bursting with citrus aromas. A unique smooth malt taste upfront is finished off by a vigorous bitterness and a ‘tidy’ clout of citrus and berry hop flavours.

Barry Island IPA is available at the City Arms, Goat Major, Terra Nova, Duke of Wellington (Cardiff), Cottage, Plough, Ty Mawr, Park, Heath, Black Lion LlLandaf and the Three Arches.

Black Mountain 5%

Close your eyes and it smells like a classic American pale ale, but Black Mountain is bigger than that.

It starts with coffee, liquorice and burnt toffee. Then, after a few seconds there’s an explosion of hops from the mountain of Amarillo, Pacifica, Citra, Summit and Apollo, before the final say goes to the Chocolate malts and their moreish smoky finish.

Black Mountain was brewed in collaboration with The Craft Beer Channel.

Black Mountain will be available in pubs from December 16th.

Secret Santa 4.5% ABV

Secret Santa is a brewed with Pale and Aromatic malts, black treacle and molasses to create a dark copper coloured, luxuriously sweet and malty Christmas beer. The addition of Bramling Cross hops and a blend of nutmeg and cloves add aromas of winter berries and flavours of a rich, spicy and warming Christmas pudding.

Secret Santa will be available in our pubs from the 9th of December.

The Crafty Chairman 4% ABV

The Crafty Chairman is a vibrant golden beer with a Belgian twist brewed by the Chairman of Brains, John Rhys. Pale Ale, Cara and Wheat malts combine with three British hops – Phoenix, First Gold and East Kent Goldings – and Belgian golden ale yeast to give aromas of fruit and spice in this crisp, refreshing and thirst-quenching beer.

The Crafty Chairman will be available in our cask ale pubs from the 9th of December.

Rye Catcher is an American Rye beer brewed in collaboration with Glenn Payne. Rye and rye crystal malts provide a spicy malt base and a vibrant copper colour to this beer which is powerfully hopped with Apollo, Columbus, Amarillo and Citra hops from the USA, producing an assertive bitterness with robust flavours of citrus and grapefruit.

Rye Catcher will be available in our cask pubs from the 9th of December.

C16642 BCB Brabo Lens no bleed

Brabo 5% ABV

This classic easy drinking Belgian pale ale made with authentic Belgian yeast from the Ardennes has a rich amber colour from Munich malt and Cara malt and a restrained floral, lightly spicy hop character from Czech Saaz and East Kent Goldings hops.

Created by beer writer Des de Moor, it evokes the Grote Markt square in Antwerp with its imposing statue of Brabo, the mythical Roman soldier who slew the giant Druon Antigoon and threw his hand into the river Schelde.

Yankee Dougal 4.2% ABV

Yankee Dougal is a Scottish style ale with a twist of American hops. Crystal and Carared malts combine to give a reddy copper beer with rich, sweet malt flavours of toffee and caramel combined with classic american hop flavours of citrus and tangerine from Willamette, Centennial and Mosaic Hops.

Yankee Dougal will be available from Wednesday 20th of November in Brains Craft Brewery pubs.

Shining Tsar is an Imperial Russian Stout, brewed with seven malts to create a rich complexity of flavours. This pitch black beer has a coffee brown head and flavours of caramel, liquorice, chocolate, burnt toffee and coffee balanced with a robust bitterness.

Shining Tsar will be available in Brains Craft Brewery pubs from Monday 11th of November.

Magnum PA 4.2% ABV

Magnum PA is a pale ale brewed with Amber and Crystal malts and Magnum (USA), Pacifica (NZ) and Apollo (USA) hops. Golden amber in colour, a sweet biscuity malt flavour combines with a sharp bitterness and notes of citrus and apricot from the hops.

Magnum PA will be available in our cask ale pubs from Wednesday 23rd October.

Eins, Zwei, Rye is a German style Roggenbier (rye beer) brewed with rye malt. A rich copper coloured beer with dry, malty and spicy flavours with a hint of ginger balanced with a citrus hop finish.

The Ides of Märzen 5.0% ABV

Brewed in collaboration with beer writer and sommelier Sophie Atherton, The Ides of Märzen is a German Oktoberfest lager with a British twist.

A beer with a brassy, golden glow, Ides was brewed with Märzen yeast and Munich, Cara and Amber malts and has an initial bready aroma followed by a strong malty and biscuit backbone. The late addition of East Kent Golding hops give an edgy bitterness complemented by fruity aromas with hints of orange marmalade. Sophie’s Dad would be proud!

Green Dragon 4.1%ABV

Green Dragon has been brewed to celebrate the annual British hop harvest. Fresh ‘green’ Goldings hops from Newnham Farm in Worcester and Pilgrim hops from the gardens of the Tŷ Mawr in North Cardiff have been used to create the distinctive ‘green hop’ character in this refreshing pale ale.

Green Dragon is available in our Brains Craft Brewery pubs from the 23rd of September.

Achilles Heel 5% ABV

Achilles Heel is a Munich style Helles lager inspired by an unfortunate injury to Brains Head Brewer, Bill Dobson. Combining Pilsner and Cara malts with the finest noble hops from the Hallertau gives a combination of sweet malt flavours and gentle spicy hops with a smooth clean finish.  This beer has been slow fermented using a German Helles lager yeast and matured for 16 weeks and will be ready to drink once Bill is fully recovered from his torn Achilles Heel in time for Octoberfest.

Barry Island IPA is back!

A-Pork-Alypse 4.5% ABV

A-Pork-Alypse is a double-chocolate and bacon porter inspired by the eclectic brews of the States. Made up of a grist of Chocolate, Brown, Dark Crystal and Smoked malt, with freshly grilled bacon and cacao nibs added to the boil, A-Pork-Alypse has the nose of a bag of pork scratching with flavours of delicious chocolate and smoked meatiness. This is a porky porter you’ll either love or hate.

Odyssey has been brewed to celebrate 25 years of the Guild British Beer Writers. Golden in colour with sweet, dry and biscuit flavours from the malt and a fresh, sappy bitterness with aromas of summer berries from the hops, this is a beer to toast the best of British beer writers.

Little Sipper 3.5% ABV

Little Sipper is a golden, hoppy ale with maximum flavour coupled with a low abv. This Sessionable IPA has light malt flavours that combine with a crisp bitterness and aromas of grapefruit, apricot, citrus and fresh pine-needles from the use of Cluster, Mounthood, Liberty and Pallisade hops.

Le’Op is a golden ale brewed with three hops from the Alsace region of France. Bouclier, Strisselspalt and Aramis hops combine to produce a bouquet of floral aromas and sweet herbal flavours, paired with biscuity malt and a clean bitter finish to produce a quaffable thirst quencher that is ‘Tres Bien’!

Three-C’Son 5%

Three-C’son is a Saison style beer brewed in collaboration with beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones. Brewed with Pilsner and Wheat malt this beer is pale and hazy, like a sunset seen through the filter of a disintegrating summer’s day. A sweet nose of ripe peach and citrus, a green apple snappiness on the palate and a hint of white pepper from the Three C’s of Columbus, Citra and Centennial, combines with an earthy spice from the use of a traditional Saison yeast that is followed by a firm, refreshingly dry finish.

This is a beer definitely not for sharing.

As Mr Real Ale Guide hits his 1000th beer review we celebrate with Grand Tripel IPA, brewed one year after the legendary Barry Island IPA. Using a medley of Premium, Crystal, Imperial and Aromatic malts, Zeus hops and late-hop Simcoe and Centennial are added before fermentation with Trappist Ale yeast giving rich spicy fruit balanced by the warming sweetness from the alcohol in this powerful, punchy and heady beer.

Stars and Stripes

Stars and Stripes 4.5% ABV

A naturally hazy golden coloured ale brewed with wheat malt and Californian Ale Yeast. An all-American hop line-up of Chinook, Centennial, Citra and Amarillo gives aromas of grapefruit and tropical fruit on the nose, citrus flavours and a crisp bitterness making Stars and Stripes a deliciously drinkable and refreshing beer.

Low-Hanging Fruit 4.8% ABV

Paying reverence to one of our most loved beers, this is an easy-drinking dark mild with a wild twist. Low-Hanging Fruit is slow fermented for six weeks with a special blend of Belgian wild yeasts, bacteria and sour Morello cherries. Classic bitter, roast malt flavours give way to a smooth, complex, slightly sour and dry finish of black cherry fruit adding a unique twist to this traditional style ale.

Brewed in collaboration with Robyn Black from the Publican’s Morning Advertiser, Blackbird is a schwarzbier style black lager. Brewed with a Southern German lager yeast, Munich and Dark Crystal malts and Saaz, Hallertau and Cascade hops, this is a refreshing beer with hints of chocolate, coffee and liquorice combined with spicy hop flavours and a mellow citrus zing.

Hop’s'Quad is brewed with Premium Pale Ale, Rye and Crystal malts to produce a rich and dark chestnut beer in which to showcase four of the finest British hops – Challenger, Bramling Cross, First Gold and Goldings. This beer is full of spicy and fruity aromas with hints of blackcurrant leading to a refreshing bitter finish.

Dissolution was brewed in collaboration with award winning beer writer Pete Brown and is a Belgian abbey-style Dubbel brewed with Munich and Dark Crystal malts, Saaz and Styrian Golding hops and a traditional Trappist Ale Yeast. This dark, full bodied and complex beer is full of rich, fruity plum flavours with a sweet raisin aroma and spicy, warming finish.

Dr Rudi is the second beer in our Single Hop Range.

Dr Rudi is a New Zealand hop named after Dr Rudi Roborgh, the ‘Father of New Zealand hops’. Dr Rudi is added at three different stages of the brewing process to provide bitterness, aroma and flavour and gives flavours of lemongrass, tropical fruit and the freshness of pine needles to this golden ale.

Brewed in the style of a German Rauchbier (smoked beer) using traditional beech wood-smoked malt from Bamberg, The Big Smoke blends a sweet and smoky malt flavour, with a woody spice from the noble Hallertau and Saaz hops.

Our IPA Challenge winning beer is back.

Boilermaker is a copper-coloured IPA brewed with Ben and Tom from Thinking Drinkers. Brewed with Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade and Willamette hops and matured with Penderyn whisky infused oak chips in casks from the distillery, the arts of distillation and brewing combine to create an epic Welsh IPA adorned with a fragrant citrus aroma, a touch of spice with hints of vanilla and a warm whisky finish.

Barry Island IPA is now available in keg.

Created by Simon Martin, aka Mr Real Ale Guide, this India Pale Ale was inspired by the ‘IPA revolution’ across the pond. The boy from Barry has used a trio of hops from the US in this pale coloured ale, which is bursting with citrus aromas. A unique smooth malt taste upfront is finished off by a vigorous bitterness and a ‘tidy’ clout of citrus and berry hop flavours.

Atlantic White blends the tradition of Belgian ‘Wit’ beers and the hop-character of American IPAs to produce a ‘White IPA’. Brewed with wheat malt and Belgian wit yeast the addition of freshly crushed coriander seeds, Curacao orange and US hops gives a light refreshing beer with a zesty and spicy finish.

BCB Bragging Rights CLIP WITH NO BLEED CMYK

Bragging Rights 5.0% ABV

Based on an ancient Welsh beer style called bragawd, Bragging Rights is a lightly golden pale ale. The addition of honey, followed by a blend of nutmeg, coriander, black pepper, cloves, cinnamon and ginger, create a refreshing beer that is initially sweet yet spicy at the same time.

 

BCB Beardface CLIP NO BLEED CMYK

Beardface 5% ABV

Beardface blends Pale Ale, Munich, Crystal, Brown and Chocolate malts with roasted barley to create a dark beer with a rich depth of malty wonderment.  Flavours of caramel, burnt toffee and roast coffee are balanced by the sweetness from lactose sugars to create a luxuriously sumptuous sweet milk stout.  Beardface was brewed in collaboration with The Goat Major, Brains Cask Ale Pub of the Year.

Dragon is brewed in celebration of Welsh Pale Ale.

Crafted in a traditional Welsh style Dragon is a 3.9%ABV pale ale. Brewed with Premium pale ale malts and a blend of Challenger and First Gold hops Dragon has hints of fruit and spice and a mild bitter finish.

First introduced for the Celt Beer Academy Festival’s celebration of Welsh Pale Ales, Dragon makes a welcome return this Christmas.

Weiss Weiss Baby 4.9%

A traditional Bavarian style Weissbier (“white beer”) brewed with malted wheat and Hallertau Tradition hops. This naturally cloudy beer uses a distinctive Weissbeer yeast to produce a light, refreshing  beer bursting with fruity banana flavours and spicy cloves. First introduced this summer in keg, Weiss Weiss Baby makes a welcome return in cask at 4.9%.

A Pils from the Hills is a full-bodied pilsner-style beer. Brewed with Pilsner Malt and hopped with Hallertau Tradition and Saaz this is a crisp, thirst-quenching beer with an elegant bitterness.

Green Dragon has been brewed to celebrate the annual British hop harvest. Fresh ‘green’ Goldings hops from Pridewood Farm in Herefordshire and Pilgrim hops from the gardens of the Tŷ Mawr in North Cardiff have been used to create the distinctive ‘green hop’ character in this refreshing pale ale.

Fruits of our Labours is brewed in collaboration with beer writer and sommALEier Melissa Cole. It has a huge tropical fruit nose from a unique blend of Citra, Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade and Summit hops which is boosted with a blend of passion fruit, mango, peach and pineapple. The finish has a spicy, rounded bitter punch, making this beer a fruity little number.

Triumphant 5.4% ABV

Created by beer writer Tim Hampson this beer is a modern take on a traditional English IPA. A new hop variety Endeavour has been combined with the elegant Sovereign hop to give a fresh, citrus character with tangerine and lime notes. It’s sure to be a Triumph.

ColonelWilliamsEastIPA-No-Bleed

Colonel Williams 6.0% ABV

Created by beer historian Martyn Cornell, this is the sort of IPA that Colonel Williams and his regiment might have drunk when they were stationed in India in the early 1840s. This light amber ale is brewed with Maris Otter malt and Goldings hops for a dry, bitter and refreshing pint.

An India Pale Ale inspired by the traditional IPAs sent to India on the high seas. This ale is light brown in colour with a classic clean and crisp taste created through the use of Admiral and Bramling Cross hops. A fresh aroma of berries with a hint of spice results in a taste that is smooth, refreshing and thirst quenching.
